The St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers open up a series on Friday that should be very competitive as the Dodgers come in after sweeping Cincinnati while the Cardinals have won four of their last five. Friday’s pitching matchup has Adam Wainwright facing Derek Lowe.
First place will be on the line in the American League West on Thursday night as the Oakland A’s and Los Angeles Angels conclude their four game series. It will be Justin Duchscherer facing Dustin Mosely.
The New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox play the middle game of their three-game set on Wednesday with Mike Mussina matching up against Javier Vazquez. The Yankees have gotten very little out of Mussina so far this season as he is 1-3 on the year with an ERA of 5.75. Vazquez has been pretty good for Chicago going 3-1 with a 3.20 ERA.
The San Diego Padres don’t get much of a break as after facing the National League Champion Colorado Rockies they now have to travel to Arizona to take on the first place Arizona Diamondbacks. It will be the first meeting between the two teams this season. Former Diamondback Tony Clark who signed with the Padres will be facing his former team for the first time.
The marquee pitching matchup on Friday takes place in Philadelphia as Cole Hamels and the Phillies host Johan Santana and the Mets. It should be a classic matchup between two of the best pitchers in baseball. “They both have a devastating changeup. The Detroit Tigers have started to play well since manager Jim Leyland threw a tirade last weekend. They will now look to get pitcher Justin Verlander on track as they face the Cleveland Indians on Thursday. Verlander is 0-2 with a 6.52 ERA this season. He has pitched a little bit better than his numbers indicate though.
The Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres conclude a three-game set on Thursday evening at Petco Park. Jake Peavy gets the start for the Padres while Jeff Francis goes for the Rockies. Peavy is already in mid-season form with an ERA of 1.64 and a 3-0 record. Francis has struggled so far going 0-2 with a 9.53 ERA.
The Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals have started the season in fine form with the Brewers starting 8-4 and the Cardinals going 9-4. Milwaukee is getting some unexpected help as Gabe Kapler, who was coaching in the minor leagues last season is leading the way.
One of the best rivalries in all of sports continues on Sunday night as the Boston Red Sox host the New York Yankees. The Yankees are schedule to throw Phil Hughes on Sunday while the Red Sox will counter with Daisuke Matsuzaka. Hughes has not started off well this season and will be under a lot of pressure on Sunday since he grew up as a Red Sox fan. Hughes couldnâ€™t make it out of the fourth inning on Tuesday against Kansas City. Hughes has never faced Boston in his career.
