A matchup of two Top 25 teams takes place at the Georgia Dome on Saturday as #9 Clemson takes on #24 Alabama. The Tigers are one of the favorites in the ACC this season but head coach Tommy Bowden has continually disappointed Clemson followers in recent seasons. Saturday’s opener is a major test for Bowden and Clemson after last season’s failure.
One of the best games of the opening college football weekend should be in St. Louis as Illinois plays Missouri on Saturday night. Last season the Tigers defeated Illinois 40-34 in the season opener. The Tigers were one win away from the BCS title game last season while the Illini played in the Rose Bowl.
This year Third-ranked USC begins the 2008 regular season with a bit of a chip on their shoulder after not making the National Championship game last season. The Trojans have set an NCAA record with six straight 11-win seasons but last year was considered a failure because they did not even make the title game. they must avoid looking past Virginia to the game against Ohio State in two weeks.
There is finally some excitement surrounding the SMU football team this season as former Hawaii head coach June Jones is in charge. SMU needs some serious help as they won just a single game a year ago and have lost their last 10 games overall. They did not win a single game in Conference USA last season. The good news is that the Mustangs were not that far from success, as five of their eight losses came by a touchdown or less, including three overtime losses. They definitely have a chance in this game as Rice was only 3-9 last season.
South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier is not making any predictions about this year’s football team just yet. Last season the Gamecocks started 6-1 but collapsed down the stretch, losing their last five games and missing out on a bowl game. That has put the pressure squarely on Spurrier to produce this season. They open up the season with an interesting test as Tom O’Brien’s North Carolina State Wolfpack come to town.
The time is finally upon us. We have watched an entire season of college basketball. We watched great young freshmen make their mark in the game and great in conference play. We watched the great conference tournaments and feverishly filled out our brackets as the tournament seedings were announced.

The Tar Heels are making their 17th Final Four appearance and that is tied for most in history with UCLA. North Carolina head coach Roy Williams is making his fourth Final Four appearance in the least seven years and is facing his former team. The Tar Heels have an all-time record of 13-14 in Final Four games.
The high scoring Memphis Tigers will try and play a fast paced game on Saturday while the UCLA Bruins will try and slow things down. It should be an interesting contrast in the second game of the Final Four.
