The final week of the NFL preseason is now upon us and Week 4 has traditionally gone to the dogs. Underdogs have been the way to go in the final exhibition game, as underdogs are 85-68-7 (55.6%) in all games since 2003 and 42-33-5 (56%) over the past five seasons.
Week No. 3 of the NFL preseason is typically viewed as the final dress rehearsal for teams, who frequently play their starters up until halftime. That mentality hasn’t played out in the results, however, as larger favorites have been dismal against the spread. Favorites of six points or more are just 6-12 against the number in Week 3 since the start of the 2003 season.

The first real week of the preseason is here and Week 1 is often the most unpredictable, as starters will typically play one or two series, with the second unit playing the remainder of the half. The second half often consists of third-string players, along with a number of free agents and players unlikely to make the final roster.
When it comes to betting NFL preseason games there are two distinct trains of thought. Many bettors shy away from the preseason games, believing they are too unpredictable and don’t want to risk their money on players who won’t be in the league on opening day. Others will jump into the fray with the Hall of Fame Game, believing that many times the preseason games offer better value than the regular season.
The 2009 NFL preseason begins on Sunday night in a nationally televised game on NBC as the Buffalo Bills face the Tennessee Titans in the Hall of Fame Game from Canton, Ohio. It will mark the debut of Terrell Owens for the Buffalo Bills.
Normally the final game of the preseason is virtually meaningless but that may not be the case in Arizona on Friday night as the Cardinals host the Denver Broncos. It was thought that Kurt Warner had won the starting quarterback job for Arizona but head coach Ken Whisenhunt was unhappy news was released by the media and supposedly Matt Leinart is still in the running.
A little bit of revenge could be on tap when the Washington Redskins host the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night in the final preseason game for both teams. Jacksonville defensive coordinator Greg Williams was expected to get the head coaching job at Washington when Joe Gibbs retired but he was bypassed for the job and Jim Zorn was hired. Williams could have some strong feelings and his Jacksonville defense could want to prove a point in this game.
Indianapolis will open up their new stadium on Sunday as they host the Buffalo Bills in preseason action. The game will be shown on NFL Network and could end up being a battle between backup quarterbacks. Normally the starters for both teams would play into the third quarter but Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning is still out and Buffalo starting quarterback Trent Edwards is questionable. That means that Jim Sorgi will get a lot of playing time for the Colts while J.P. Losman will see a lot of time for the Bills.
