The Southeastern conference also known as the SEC has always been known for their great football teams and their run of national championships, however they are also known for their great basketball teams. This year in the SEC tournament plenty of those teams will be on display.
Every week here at the Bang the Book we will look at some of the conferences in college basketball. The conference report will show the current state of affairs in that conference as March gets closer and closer. Taking a look at the conferences can lay out a blue print of the best teams to bet on when the Madness starts in March.
After stumbling to a 7-6 record overall and a 2-6 record in conference play in 2011, Mississippi State has been one of the biggest surprises in the SEC this season with an overall record of 7-0 straight-up (5-2 against the spread) and a 3-0 start both SU and ATS in conference play. The total has stayed UNDER in five of the Bulldogs last six games behind a defense that is giving-up an average of just 14.4 points a game.
Alabama continued its march to the SEC title game and possible berth in the BCS championship with another blow-out win to remain the top-ranked team in the nation. Florida is right behind the Tide at No.2 after an impressive rout of South Carolina. The Gamecocks fell all the way to No.13 in the latest BCS poll, while LSU remained at No.6 and Georgia climbed back into the top 10 at No.10. The surprising Mississippi State Bulldogs are hanging tough at No.11 and Texas A&M fell to No.20 after losing to LSU.

While No.1 Alabama remained idle last week there was a major shake-up in the SEC as a result of a couple of upsets. South Carolina moved up to No.3 in the latest AP poll with its dominating victory over Georgia, which is now No.14. Florida made an even bigger jump to No.4 after beating LSU. The Tigers fell from fourth to No.9. Mississippi State moved-up a couple of spots to No.19 and Texas A&M entered the rankings at No.22 to give the conference seven teams in the Top 25.

Georgia has steamrolled its way to a 5-0 straight-up (2-3 against the spread) start behind an offense that is ranked eighth in the nation in scoring with an average of 48.2 points a game. The Bulldogs are a perfect 3-0 SU in conference play with dominating victories over Missouri, Vanderbilt, and Tennessee in which they outscored their opponents by a combined 140-67. The total has gone OVER in all five games.
LSU is a perfect 5-0 straight-up (2-3 against the spread) on the year, but fell another spot in the latest AP poll after an uninspired 38-22 victory over a heavily outmatched Towson team that came into this game as 43-point underdogs on the road. The Tigers also failed to cover the week before as 18-point favorites on the road against Auburn in a tight 12-10 victory.
Conference play is in full swing in the SEC with a couple of huge showdowns on this upcoming Saturday’s slate. There are still six teams in the conference ranked in the AP Top 25 starting with 5-0 Alabama. LSU fell another notch to No.4 while Georgia held steady at No.5 and South Carolina remained ranked No.6. Florida moved into the top 10 at No.10 and the final SEC team in the poll is Mississippi State at No.20. The SEC is arguably the best football conference in college football and often gets plenty of media attention, but this week they deserve it. With some of the top teams facing off in Week 6, many of the football betting fans rushed to the sportsbooks on Sunday to see what they opening lines were on these two quality matchups for Week 6.
Tennessee jumped out to a fast start with a couple of solid victories over North Carolina State and Georgia State, but was somewhat exposed in a 37-20 loss to Florida as a 3.5-point favorite at home in Week 3. The Volunteers bounced back with a 47-26 win over Akron last Saturday as 31.5-point favorites at home, but as a whole, the jury is still out on just how good this team really is.
