TBS Sunday Baseball Betting Free Pick: Boston Red Sox vs. Philadelphia Phillies
Boston Red Sox
A day after getting one hit, the Philadelphia Phillies will have to shake off their issues and get back in the saddle in the rubber match of a three game MLB betting series with the Boston Red Sox. The Sox stormed back from a 5-1 defeat on Friday night to take the second game of this set. RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka tossed eight shutout innings, allowing just one hit in the 5-0 win.
One of the many ageless wonders in baseball will take the mound on Sunday afternoon for manager Terry Francona, as RHP Tim Wakefield will get the start. Wakefield will be making his 427th career start on Sunday and his sixth of the ’10 season. The knuckler is just 0-2 with a 5.31 ERA on the season, but it is pretty clear that is isn’t a matter of age catching up with him. Wakefield had a productive start against Toronto 11 days ago in his most recent start, throwing seven innings and allowing just five hits and three runs in a tough 3-2 loss to the Blue Jays. In his career, Wakefield is 3-1 with a 3.12 ERA against the Phillies.
The bad news for Wakefield is that RHP Roy Halladay is the man that he is going up against. The even worse news is that Halladay lost his most recent start against the Pirates in spite of the fact that he threw a complete game, his fourth of the year. Without any shred of a doubt, Halladay is one of the best pitchers in baseball, and his 6-2 record and 1.64 ERA are indicative of that. He has already fanned 58 men against just ten walks this year in 71.1 innings of work. No pitcher in baseball is average as many innings per outing as Halladay is, as manager Charlie Manuel is getting a shade under eight frames from his horse per start.
Halladay hasn’t had the greatest career against the Sox from his days in Toronto. He is just 14-14 with a 4.28 ERA. Is it a sign of weakness? Perhaps. Still, this is a price that can’t be ignored. As Halladay proved in his most recent start, anything can happen on any given day. Today may be Boston’s lucky day.
