Friday night’s lone college football betting battle heads to Nippert Stadium, where ESPN and its team will be broadcasting the duel between the Cincinnati Bearcats and the Temple Owls.
The Owls have been one of the worst teams in the country this year, and we are being given a constant reminder as to why this program was booted out of the Big East in the first place. Now the Owls are back under the American Athletic Conference banner, and they are proving to be incompetent when competing at the highest level. Temple has already been beaten by teams like the Fordham Rams and the Idaho Vandals, and the truth of the matter is that things are going to get worse before they get better with a really tough schedule relatively speaking ahead. This offense really doesn’t have much in the way of talent, as gone are the days when RB Bernard Pierce and the gang would just jam it down people’s throats. Now, we have RB Kenneth Harper, who has scored six of the team’s 11 offensive touchdowns in five games. QB Connor Reilly is one of the three that have been throwing the ball all over the field, but none are completing much more than half of their passes, and the three have combined for just three TDs and four picks thus far on the season.
The Cincy defense has to be licking its chops to get back on the field as quickly as possible, as the last time that we saw it play, the club was allowing 26 points inexplicably to the South Florida Bulls. Save for perhaps Temple, South Florida clearly has the most embarrassing offense in the AAC, and it’s a wonder how in the heck the Bearcats, who were supposed to challenge for the league title this year, could lose that game. QB Munchie Legaux is out for the season, but we think that the team should be in better hands with QB Brendon Kay calling the shots. Kay has completed 67% of his passes this year and is averaging nearly eight yards per pass attempt, and when you have a quarterback that can do that, good things should be happening. Head Coach Tommy Tuberville knows that these next four games against Temple, Connecticut, Memphis, and SMU had better be won, because there won’t be a game after that in which the Bearcats will be favored.
All that said, we aren’t all that sure that the Bearcats are beating this number. Laying three touchdowns in a lot, and it is clear that Temple is a very sharp bet. The Owls aren’t going to have to do all that much offensively, but we think that they could at least get to 14. If they do that, they’ll cover this spread, as we don’t see Kay leading Cincinnati to 35. Take the points.
