The hype around this Texas team dwindled just a bit over the course of the last week or so, knowing that it just lost two out of three to the Tampa Bay Rays. That being said, the club is still 8-1 this year on the road, which has to be an encouraging sign getting ready for this series at the Rogers Centre. But of course, the man of the hour is going to be Yu Darvish, who will be hurling for the Rangers on Monday. Darvish has proven that he can throw with the best of them in the bigs, and he is now 3-0 with a svelte 2.42 ERA in 26.0 innings of work. He struck out 10 in his last start against the New York Yankees, raising his K/9 ratio right up near nine with 24 whiffs in those 26 frames. Darvish at times walks a few to many batters, and 15 free passes issued at this point has contributed to his rather lofty 1.58 WHIP, but in the end, batters are hitting just .255 against him, and he hasn’t allowed a home run at this point in spite of the fact that his last two starts came against the Yankees and the Detroit Tigers, two of the biggest mashing teams in the game.
Toronto is still hanging a game above .500 going into this week, and if it can keep that up, it might find itself as a buyer and not a seller at the trade deadline. The team is going to be calling upon Kyle Drabek on Monday night. Drabek was the key in the trade that sent Roy Halladay to the Philadelphia Phillies, and there is no doubt that he is starting to pan out just the way that the Jays anticipated that he would. At just 24 years old, Drabek has plenty of time to build up strength in that prized right arm of his, and he has had four very good starts to show for his work thus far this year. The righty has a 2-1 record and a 2.25 ERA, and he hasn’t allowed more than two runs in a game this season. His walk tally is too high with 13 free passes in 24 frames, but six of those came two starts ago versus the Kansas City Royals on the road. Last year, this was a big problem as well, as Drabek had 55 walks against just 51 strikeouts, which is why he had an ERA of a dreadful 6.06.
Texas Rangers @ Toronto Blue Jays Pick: The fact of the matter is that the Darvish experience is going to end up fizzling at least just a tad at some point in all likelihood. Batters are going to start to catch up to him, and when they do, it could be a bit ugly. In the end, we think that the Jays have a great price here on their side on Monday, and we’ll ride them and their young stud in the making to the finish line to start off the week.
