The Masters
Augusta, Georgia April 9-12

The PGA Tour first Major golf tournament of the year kicks off every April from Augusta Georgia at the home of The Masters. Outside of being just one of the four majors on the PGA Tour, The Masters is a tournament that provides high competition among the best golfers in the world on one of the most beautiful golf courses in the world. The 2009 Masters will be the first Major Tournament that Tiger Woods will make his return in after winning the U.S Open last season and having to have year ending knee surgery in a matter of days following his victory. Woods has always played well at Augusta owning 4 green jackets and two runner-up finishes the past two seasons. However, Woods will be accompanied by the best players in the world all fighting for a chance to conquer Augusta National.

Lefty Phil Mickelson had one of the most memorable long time coming major victories when he won The Masters back in 2004 draining a birdie on the 18th hole to seal the victory. Mickelson backed up the 2004 win by claiming his 2nd green jacket in 2006 and “lefty” has always been a factor when the Tour rolls around to Augusta every April. Mickelson already has two wins on the circuit this season and is a 7/1 favorite to win this coming weekend. Mickelson actually might be an intriguing bet considering how well he plays at Augusta, but there are plenty of others to keep in mind. One player at the top of your radar is Zach Johnson. Johnson won the 2nd event on the PGA Tour this season and his style of play really sits well with Augusta. Johnson won the event back in 2007 and stands at a very profitable 40/1 long shot to capture his 2nd green jacket.

Outside of Tiger and Mickelson, the guy receiving the best odds to land a victory at Augusta is Padraig Harrington. Harrington was the big name on Tour winning two majors in Woods absence last season stealing whatever spotlight was left. Harrington is a 16/1 favorite to win this Sunday. Other notable guys to keep an eye on in the field are for one Geoff Ogilvy. Ogilvy has won twice on the tour already this season and his major championship experience needed to pull it together in clutch performances. Sergio Garcia climbed as high as 2nd in the world rankings earlier this year and is 30/1 favorite to win his first major tournament. Unfortunately, Garcia has never played extremely consistent at Augusta. Other notables like Ernie Els are 33/1 and Retief Goosen who won 3 weeks ago is a 25/1 favorite this weekend.

Finally the man everyone will be watching without a doubt will be Tiger Woods. Woods dramatically came up with a big win two weeks ago at the Arnold Palmer Invitational just in time to grab all of the focus at Augusta. Woods had appeared a bit rusty in his first few performances, but the legend came from 5 shots behind on Sunday to win two weeks ago at Bay Hill which equaled his largest final round comeback of his career. However, Woods is a huge 7/4 favorite to win the 2009 Masters making the profit margin rather disappointing for golf’s biggest star. Placing a bet on Tiger may be more of a risk than a profit considering the low odds to bank if he does pull out the win. However one thing is for certain, that is Tiger will likely be lurking around the leader board this Sunday and nobody can pull out victories in clutch situations better than Woods.
