Torres may be dropped for Chelsea’s Champions League tie

Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti has stated that £50 million striker Fernando Torres is not guaranteed a starting spot for The Blues in their Champions League quarter final second leg against Manchester United.

The Spaniard has struggled since his January move from Liverpool and is still to score for his new club in nine appearances. Torres has looked decidely low on confidence and like he is lacking self belief.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s league tie with Wigan on Saturday, Italian Ancelotti said: “Fernando might not start against United, of course. Why not? I have to choose the best line-up. There’s a lot of competition up front and anything can happen.”

Ancelotti also said: “I have to choose the players, not comparing the players with the money the club paid for them. I have to choose the line-up looking at the training sessions, the condition of the players and the spirit. Fernando knows this very well.”

The Italian also said that Torres has the right attitude and that it will be a big relief when he does finally score: “As soon as he scores his first goal, it will be like every Chelsea fan will have scored. Don’t judge a player by the money he earns or that the club paid for the transfer. Judge by his behaviour on the pitch.”

United have the advantage in the tie as they beat Chelsea 1-0 in the first leg, and Ancleotti and Torres will need something special if they are to stand a chance of getting through to the semi-finals.
