College Basketball Betting Odds from Bookmaker
While the underdogs and Cinderella’s of the 2014 NCAA Tournament will always steal the headlines, when the dust settles and the college basketball championship complete it is usually the higher seeds that are holding the trophy. In Memphis the South Region will host a game that features the UCLA Bruins and the Florida Gators as they both battle on to see which team will have the right to go to the Elite Eight.
The latest 2014 NCAA Tournament college basketball odds for this game opened up with the Gators listed as (-4) point favorites. Since the opening the sports betting public is proving that they like the top ranked teams in the country as the early money is coming in on the Gators. This early betting frenzy has moved the point spread and it can now be found as high as minus five at several of the top rated online sportsbooks.
The Gators have proved that they have enough talent to win this tournament, but the Bruins may be one of the hottest teams in the tournament of late as they are winning games by playing great basketball.
The Gators are winning with experience and tough defense. When the Gators are engaged, not as disinterested as they seemed in a too-close win against No. 16 seed Albany on Thursday they’re relentless. They swarm. Then they run their offense, and no matter what happens around the basket, they swarm again. Head coach Billy Donovan makes them practice that way, valuing sprinting, transition pressure and suffocating half-court defense over baskets. Donovan’s reasoning? If they do the first three correctly, the fourth will come. Florida did that perfectly in Saturday’s 61-45 win against Pittsburgh to become the first team to lock up a Sweet 16 spot. The Gators scored 16 points off 11 turnovers and held the Panthers to 37.3 percent shooting. They are expected to be engaged when they play in this big game, but will the Bruins be up for the challenge.
The Bruins expect to win this game and a championship. Expectations are always high in Westwood because of the 11 national championship banners hanging in Pauley Pavilion, the first 10 coming under John Wooden and the last one coming in 1995. This game also has a history. Florida beat UCLA in the national championship game in 2006 and again in the national semifinals the following season. The Gators also eliminated the Bruins in the second round in 2011. Those games are long gone now.
Now is the time for the Bruins to put all of their hopes into one big game and hope for the best. They will be a good team in the future, but for now this game belongs to the Gators. The Gators are on a championship run and will not be stopped by the Bruins.
Free Pick: Florida Gators -5
