If there is a dark horse that can come out of nowhere to beat the US Open betting lines, the winner of this quarterfinal match between Gael Monfils and Novak Djokovic might be a fantastic candidate.

This is as far as Monfils has ever made it in a Grand Slam event that was not the French Open. Even then, the Frenchman has only made it to a semifinal once at Roland Garros and had never made it past the fourth round here at the US Open before this year. We always knew that a hard surface was one that was good for Monfils to play on, as he plays with an immense amount of speed that is duplicated by none on the ATP Tour. This hasn’t been the easiest road in the world for Monfils to reach the quarterfinals, though. He had to endure a tremendous five set match on the opening match day here for the men at the US Open against Robert Kendrick. Since then though, Monfils is only getting better and better. He dropped just one set in three matches against Igor Andreev, Janko Tipsarevic, and Richard Gasquet, all of which are considered amongst that second tier of players in the world.
The time very well could be now for Djokovic to finally bust onto the scene as one of the top male tennis players in the world. Beating Monfils should be a cinch should he have the desire to be placed in the same sentence as Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. A semifinalist in each of the last three years, reaching this point in the US Open is nothing new for Djokovic. This is his sixth straight Grand Slam tournament in which he has reached the quarterfinals, but unfortunately for him, three of those previous five have ended right here. Just like Monfils, the Serbian just keeps getting better and better after a shaky start in this tournament. It was a matter of survival against unknown Viktor Troicki for Djokovic, who needed to win the final two sets 7-5 and 6-3 just to reach the second round of the tournament. From that point on, he took out Philipp Petzschner and a pair of Americans, James Blake and Mardy Fish in straight sets.
Djokovic really needs to make another statement here. He is a fairly hefty favorite to take down Monfils, but we feel as though he is winning this match a bare minimum of four out of five times, especially in this sort of a setting. Things tend to spiral downward for Monfils when they start to go wrong, and we think that will end up being exactly what happens in a straight sets defeat at the hands of Djokovic.
