Rafa has won seven Grand Slam events in his career, but he has yet to capture the last jewel for his mantle here at the US Open. Nadal has been a semifinalist twice in 2008 and 2009, but has never made it to the finale. This could be a huge test for Nadal, as Verdasco is probably going to be the biggest challenge that he has ended up facing to date since winning Wimbledon earlier this summer. It’s hard to beat a man that just doesn’t get broken, and just like all of the rest of his pray, Nadal took out Feliciano Lopez late on Tuesday night without dropping a service game. Though he hasn’t dropped a set yet, Nadal hasn’t been picking up breaks left and right either. He has three sets already in this tournament that have gone to tiebreakers, and has only won two sets of his 12 by more than one break.
For the third time in his career, Verdasco has made it to the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam event. This is the second straight year in which he has reached this point in the US Open, but he has only gotten to one semifinal in a major tournament in his career (2009 Australian Open). Unlike Nadal, Verdasco has played a whole boatload of tennis to reach the quarterfinals. He had to survive a five set marathon against Fabio Fognini in the first round, but nothing was like his most recent match against David Ferrer. Ferrer took a two sets to none lead in the fourth round on Tuesday, but started to watch things slip. Verdasco captured the third and fourth sets by identical 6-3 margins. The final set was a classic, and who knows how long it would’ve gone had the US Open not had the rule in place that all five sets can be decided by a tiebreaker. Verdasco posted a 7-4 victory in the last set tiebreaker after erasing a 4-1 deficit in that set.
Verdasco is hot right now, but he has probably just run out of gas. Ferrer provided a tough challenge for Verdasco, but Nadal is totally on a different level. That being said, we’re talking about Verdasco only having to win this match one out of nine times to turn a profit. We love Rafa, but at this stage of the game, no one should be this big of an underdog. Take the longshot here on the US Open betting lines.
