Wawrinka is certainly in uncharted territories here in the quarterfinals of the US Open. He is the highest seed left remaining on the men’s side of the draw by quite a bit. This is also his first trip into the second week of a Grand Slam event. The Swiss native is going to try to help remove the tag as that “other” tennis player from Switzerland, and he’ll have a chance to do so if he can pull yet another upset off in the quarters. Matches are clearly getting harder and harder for Wawrinka as this tournament progresses, and one has to wonder how much more he can take before he is broken and bounced. Wawrinka took down both Mikhail Kukushkin and Juan Ignacio Chela in straight sets before winning arguably the biggest match of his career in four sets against Andy Murray, one of the up and coming players in the world. Wawrinka responded in a huge way in the fourth round instead of folding up shop, as he knocked off Sam Querrey 7-6 (11-9), 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in a truly epic match on Tuesday.
Russians have been rising through the ranks in tennis on the WTA Tour, but few are really excelling on the ATP Tour at this point. Youzhny could be the next big thing out of Russia. This is just his fourth quarterfinal in a Grand Slam event ever. His most recent was at Roland Garros this year. He hasn’t played well historically at the US Open in his career, though he does have a semifinal appearance here in 2006. That was the best performance for Youzhny at any Grand Slam event. However, this is easily his next best showing ever at Flushing, as his previous best was a slew of third round exits. The last three matches for Youzhny have all been decided in four sets. Two of those victories were very notable, as John Isner and Tommy Robredo are certainly no pushovers. Youzhny hasn’t been broken more than once in any set in this tournament, and if that keeps up, he is going to be a very tough out.
Youzhny is hot right now, but we tend to think that Wawrinka is going to be the man that gets through in this spot. There is a particular “it” that the Swiss man is playing with right now, and that “it” is certainly worth trying him out as a short underdog in US Open betting action.
