USC Trojans vs. Oregon State Beavers Preview and Free Pick
(7-3, 5-5 ATS)
Oregon State Beavers
(4-5, 5-3-1 ATS)
For USC, the opportunity to win ten games and keep a whole bunch of teams away from a bowl game in the Pac-10 is what it is thriving for. It did a fantastic job of wrecking the season of the Arizona Wildcats last weekend, and provided a reminder to the rest of the conference how talented this team is in spite of the fact that it is on probation. We tend to forget at times just how deep the talent pool is that the Trojans have to choose from, especially on offense. Even though the ‘D’ has struggled at times, when you have names like QB Matt Barkley, RB Marc Tyler, RB Allen Bradford, RB CJ Gable, WR Robert Woods, and WR Ronald Johnson to work with, you’re going to score a lot of points. That’s exactly what has happened. In a different year, Barkley would be a Heisman Trophy finalist with the Men of Troy, as he will have well over 3,000 yards and at least 30 scores by the time the season is said and done with. He is leading an offense that ranks No. 16 overall, No. 29 in passing, No. 21 in rushing, and No. 18 in scoring at 35.2 points per game.
Back to back losses to the UCLA Bruins and Washington State Cougars have left the Beavers in a total state of disarray, and they need to win at least two of their final three games to go bowling. No offense OSU, but it isn’t happening. The Beavers have to take on the Trojans before taking a trip to the Farm to face the Stanford Cardinal, and lastly is the Civil War at home against the No. 1 team in the land, the Oregon Ducks. The offense has been stymied in each of the last two weeks, scoring just 14 points in each game, something that is incredibly uncharacteristic for a Mike Riley coached team. QB Ryan Katz has had control of the football the entire way this year, as he has completed 60.1 percent of his passes for 1,822 yards with 14 scores against five picks. RB Jacquizz Rodgers is finally getting into the end zone as often as he should, as he has 13 TDs, but it seems a bit disappointing that he doesn’t have at least 1,000 yards on the ground already in just nine games this year.
USC is the superior side, but we aren’t so sure that the Beavers aren’t the better pick. The Trojans are far more concerned about potentially keeping the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and their arch rivals, the UCLA Bruins out of bowl games in the weeks to come, so this one very well could slip under the radar.
