College Football Odds from BetDSI
Point Spread: Utah State -8.5
The San Jose State Spartans and the Utah State Aggies both were members of the WAC for quite some time, but now, they are contesting the college football odds against one another as members of the Mountain West on Friday Night Football on ESPN.
Utah State isn’t going to end up crashing the BCS by any stretch of the imagination this year, but it has a man in QB Chuckie Keeton that could crash the party for the Heisman Trophy if he can keep this up. Through four games, Keeton has 14 TD passes against just one INT, and those are the types of splits that are required to make you a Heisman hopeful for a middling school in a middling conference. Keeton isn’t just a one-man band, though. Both RB Joey DeMartino and RB Joe Hill have over 200 rushing yards already this season, and the receivers are spread out nicely throughout the field for Keeton. The trick might be getting pressure on the opposition. Last year, San Jose State managed just -4 yards on 41 carries when these two teams met thanks to the quantity of times that the Aggies were able to get sacks on the quarterback.
We probably haven’t learned all that much about San Jose State at this point in the season. The team was able to cover against the Stanford Cardinal in a game that it was clearly overmatched in, and it was beaten on the road by the Minnesota Golden Gophers in a game that it probably should have stuck around in but didn’t. This is the first really competitive game against a team that is beatable, but isn’t too easy like the Sacramento State Hornets were in Week 1. QB David Fales is sacked far too often for his own good, and he no longer has the man that has been a security blanket in San Jose for the last three seasons in WR Noel Grigsby. Two weeks ago, Grigsby saw his season come to a close with a knee injury, and that has really hurt this offense. Grigsby was a real playmaker, and someone else is going to need to step up and figure out how to pick up that slack if the Spartans are going to even make a bowl game this year. Remember though, that Fales threw for nearly 4,200 yards and 33 TDs last season, and he has the ability to certainly chuck the ball all over the place with efficiency.
This is a heck of a lot of points to have on the board in favor of the Spartans at the start of this game. This is one of the best 1-2 teams in America as we see it, and Utah State should be quite careful. San Jose State will get its yards, and it should get its points. The defense should hold Keeton to a little less than what he managed last year, and if that turns out to be the case, this is a game that the Spartans could win down the stretch.
Utah State Aggies vs. San Jose State Spartans Pick: San Jose State Spartans +8.5
