College Football Betting Favorite: Georgia Tech -7.5
The Virginia Tech Hokies are coming off a triple overtime win over the Marshall Thundering Herd. It certainly wasn’t pretty, but the Hokies got the job done and moved to 3-1 on the season. Georgia Tech outlasted North Carolina 28-20 to move to 4-0 last weekend. Virginia Tech has won the last three meetings between these two teams, but the Yellow Jackets are favored in this one.
Virginia Tech lost their season opener 35-10 against Alabama. Though the score looked lopsided, Virginia Tech actually outgained the Crimson Tide in that game. The Hokies defense has been very strong this season, but the offense hasn’t been able to get on track. Overall, Virginia Tech’s defense ranks fifth in the country in total defense. Star corner Antoine Exum is listed as questionable for this game. He is the leader of a very talented secondary. Virginia Tech only allowed 361 yards despite playing three overtimes against a very good Marshall offense last weekend.
The Hokies offense is averaging just 341.8 yards per game so far in 2013. The rushing game has been subpar, and the passing game has been downright terrible. Logan Thomas has all kinds of ability, but he is very inconsistent as the team’s quarterback. Thomas is completing only 48.5% of his passes this year. He has thrown four touchdowns and six interceptions on the year. He’ll have to raise his level of play if Virginia Tech is going to be a player in the ACC title discussion this season. Thomas did have a good game against Georgia Tech last season.
Georgia Tech has been a bit down the last couple years. The Yellow Jackets did great when Paul Johnson first took over as their coach, but their progress definitely stalled out the past two seasons. What was holding back the team? It was clearly the defense. Paul Johnson’s offense has been able to run the ball against virtually anyone the last few years, but the defense hasn’t been stopping anyone. With a new defensive coordinator and a new scheme, this year’s Yellow Jackets defense has been much improved thus far. The Yellow Jackets are 11th in the nation in total defense, and they are allowing only 11.3 points per game.
Vad Lee gives the Yellow Jackets a nice weapon at the quarterback position. Lee is a good running quarterback like Georgia Tech always has, but he is also a solid passer. The team has a little bit more ability to stretch the field than they have typically had, and that makes the defense stay honest. Lee has 7 touchdown passes and just one interception so far this year. David Sims is the team’s leading rusher, and he is averaging 5.6 yards per carry. The Yellow Jackets are putting up 45.3 points per game in 2013.
Free Pick: Virginia Tech +7.5
The Hokies offense might not be top-notch, but this defense is very good. Virginia Tech has slowed down the triple option better than most teams in the past few years. Look for this game to stay close.
