Virginia Tech Hokies vs. North Carolina Tar Heels Pick, Trends, and Preview
Virginia Tech Hokies
(7-2, 6-3 ATS)
North Carolina Tar Heels
(6-3, 6-3 ATS)
The ACC Coastal Division could be decided on Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill, as the Virginia Tech Hokies could sew it all up if they can beat the North Carolina Tar Heels in college football betting action.
The Hokies will win the ACC Coastal Division once again if they can get a ‘W’ and watch the Miami Hurricanes lose earlier in the day. Even if this one isn’t won, winning out would still win the division and send the Hokies to the ACC Championship Game. The concern might be snaring an at large bid to the BCS if all else fails, but that loss to the James Madison Dukes probably assured that VT won’t be in the Top 14 in the nation if it loses the ACC title game. The Hokies won last week for the seventh straight time thanks to some good ol’ fashioned Beamer Ball. Special teams produced the game winning TD in a 28-21 win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, though the ‘W’ wasn’t enough to keep a six game ATS winning streak going. With RB Ryan Williams nowhere in sight this year, QB Tyrod Taylor has really had to pick up the slack. He has done just that, throwing for 1,739 yards and 16 TDs with just four picks. He also leads the team in rushing with 584 yards. However, don’t forget about RB Darren Evans and RB David Wilson, the two of which have combined for just under 1,000 rushing yards and 13 scores on the season.
North Carolina pulled off a huge upset last week against the Florida State Seminoles to keep its name in the running for the ACC crown this year, but this is another must win game in a huge spot. The Heels just got a huge performance out of QB TJ Yates, who threw for 439 yards and three TDs against the hapless FSU defense that ranks amongst the best in the country. RBs Johnny White and Shaun Draughn have both had solid years as well. White has rushed for 720 yards and seven scores, while Draughn has 386 yards and four tuddies. WR Dwight Jones, who had 233 yards on just eight catches last week, has pulled down 40 balls for a whopping 716 yards and four TDs on the campaign. We’re still trying to figure out how the UNC defense has stayed ranked in the top half of the country in every single category in spite of the fact that it has had all of these suspensions and injuries to deal with. The big injury now is that of LB Quan Sturdivant, who might be the top defensive player in the country. He is dealing with a hamstring injury and is questionable on the day.
This game just means to much to the Hokies for them to blow it. V-Tech knows that this is the best chance to wrap up the ACC Coastal Division, and it won’t want to destroy the chance. There are too many offensive weapons for the Hokies, and when parlayed with that defense and special teams prowess known as Beamer Ball, this is the top team in the conference for a reason.
