NBA Betting: Golden State Warriors vs Denver Nuggets
The Golden State Warriors have been one of the hottest teams in the NBA since right before Christmas. Recently the Denver Nuggets began to catch fire, to put themselves into contention for a playoff spot in the West. On Wednesday night these two teams will collide in NBA betting action that is scheduled to take place at 10:35 PM ET at the Oracle Arena in Oakland.
The Warriors recently had a 10-game winning streak snapped, but they hope they have started another one with Friday night’s win over Boston. They have had the benefit of four full days of rest. Denver just had its own five-game win streak broken at Utah. Armed with a faster pace than that which they were playing before, they hope to get started again in their drive to a playoff berth.
In the NBA betting odds that have been established at BetAnySports for this game, the Warriors are laying points at home:
There is a cloud still hanging over the Nuggets as it regards Andre Miller, the backup point guard who has essentially been frozen out from the rest of the team while management tries to work out a trade with someone. Miller and first-year coach Brian Shaw just didn’t get along or agree on philosophy, and things came to a head when Shaw kept Miller out of the game on a “coach’s decision” for the first time in the fifteen years of Miller’s pro career. The interesting thing NBA bettors have noticed, however, is that ever since Miller has been taken out of the picture, this team has started to play much better.
In the last seven games, for example, Denver has hit the century mark every time, and averaged almost 115 points per game. In the seven games prior to that, they were averaging just over 92 points per contest. It’s no coincidence that they have started to win since they’ve been scoring more points and playing more of an up-tempo game. Shaw chose to alter his approach to go more in that direction, which most of the Denver players were used to under George Karl. That’s the style Miller also preferred, and that’s why it seems indeed ironic to many BetAnySports customers that Shaw has begun to turn away from the strategy Miller was complaining about the first place.
But what’s done is done; this team is trying to rebound from a 118-103 loss to Utah in Salt Lake City two nights ago. Leading into that game, the Nuggets had shot better than 50% from the field in four of their previous five games. They have also gone over the posted total in the NBA betting odds in six of their last seven contests. Denver is currently 19-18 straight up, which is good for ninth place in the Western Conference standings. That’s not good enough for a playoff spot yet (they are two games behind the Phoenix Suns, who occupy the #8 position), so they are going to have to hustle in the second half of the season.
Golden State is currently fifth in the West, with a 25-14 record, and are 19-19 against the basketball betting lines. They had their winning streak broken at Brooklyn one week ago, as they committed 18 turnovers, but took care of the ball a lot better at home against Boston on Friday, coughing it up just eleven times. However, they shot poorly (41.3%) and as a result, they were only able to beat the Celtics 99-97 as an 11.5-point favorite in basketball betting. Inasmuch as Denver now averages 102.6 points per game, this would appear to be an opponent playing at a pace that is very much to the Warriors’ liking.
But Golden State won at a slower pace as well. In the previous meeting between these teams, which took place on December 23, Denver was cold from beyond the three-point arc, hitting just three of 13 attempts. Golden State won that game at the Pepsi Center 89-81. Stephen Curry was held to just 14 points in that game on 5-of-14 shooting, but is that necessarily a handicap for the Warriors? Here’s an interesting thing for NBA bettors to ponder – in the thirteen games in which Curry has been held below 20 points, Golden State is a perfect 13-0 straight up. Perhaps they just become harder to defend when other players participate much more in the offense.
