The Caps have dropped three out of four, and because of that, they are still right on the verge of getting into and being left out of the postseason. They are two points back coming into play on Wednesday night. The Buffalo Sabres have the upper hand right now, but the Ottawa Senators are in the No. 6 hole right now as well. Two of those three are going to be in the postseason barring either an epic collapse or a surge from a team like the Winnipeg Jets from behind over the course of the last two weeks of the year. Nicklas Backstrom is out of the fold with a concussion, and he is likely out for the season. To make matters worse in this one, Tommy Vokoun is listed as questionable at best for this game with a lower body injury. If he misses out on this game, the Caps are going to have a real problem in net, knowing that neither new call up Braden Holtby nor Michal Neuvirth have had seasons to be proud of. Missing the playoffs is a real possibility, and this is the type of game that might have to be won if the Capitals want to get into the dance.
If you take out that amazing run that the Bruins went on in the latter stages of the first half of the season, they really are just a relatively average team. They haven’t played all that well, and they have some big time gaps in their schedule in which they just didn’t get all that many points. Boston knows that it plays in a weak Northeast Division though, and that is why it finally looks like it has put away the Ottawa Senators and Buffalo Sabres. The Bruins are going to be the No. 2 seed in the East in all likelihood, but they aren’t going to want to mess around and bring the Sens and Sabres back into the thick of the fight going into the last week of the year. Even though both Nathan Horton and Marc Savard have concussions, there is still plenty of talent to go around on this team. The B’s have averaged 3.2 goals per game this year in spite of the fact that Tyler Seguin is leading the team with just 61 points in 76 games. Seguin is one of the five players on this team that have at least 50 points this year, and there are a whopping six others that have at least 30 points. This well-rounded nature is what makes this team so dangerous, because there aren’t all that many shifts in which there aren’t some big time scoring threats on the ice.
Washington Capitals @ Boston Bruins Pick: Washington just doesn’t have that mojo right now, and you can bet that Boston would love to make sure that a very dangerous team is knocked out of the playoffs. The Bruins are going to be playing this one to try to carry some momentum towards the postseason, and we think that they will do just that when push comes to shove on Thursday night.
