Interleague MLB betting action heads to historic Fenway Park on Saturday afternoon, as the Boston Red Sox look to take advantage of the visiting Washington Nationals.
The Nats are still doing their job and are still competing in the NL East, but they have been a mediocre team on the road and could be up against it in this one. One of the big time players that was picked up in the offseason that is making a big difference this year is going to be on the mound on Saturday when Gio Gonzalez gets the ball. He had a bad start in his last outing against the Atlanta Braves, allowing three runs and seven hits in 4.2 innings of work, but he is going to be expected to do better on Saturday. Gonzalez still has remarkable stats for the year. He is 7-2 on the campaign and is well on his way to his third straight 15+ win season. The southpaw has allowed just one home run on the year, and he has 84 strikeouts against 28 walks. His 2.31 ERA and 1.03 WHIP are great numbers, but in the end, the truly impressive stat is that batters are batting just .172 against Gonzalez this year.
The Red Sox know that they are going to need a heck of a lot better play out of their pitchers as we head towards the halfway point of the season. The hope is that Daisuke Matsuzaka can be the man to help this club out to run down the top teams in the AL East. The Japanese star really hasn’t pitched well over the course of the last three years after a remarkable 2008. He is just 16-15 to show for his work in his 45 outings in these last three years, which have been riddled with injuries. Dice-K had a 5.30 ERA last year with a 1.47 WHIP. Batters did only hit .224 against him, but the righty also had 23 walks against 26 strikeouts in 37.1 innings of work. He has never started against the Nationals before in his career, but this is going to be a heck of a challenge against a team that is up and coming. It will also be tough to get going again at Fenway Park, where the Boston faithful have no tolerance for the fact that Dice-K has been on the DL all year long.
Oh, oddsmakers… When will you learn? Dice-K was a waste of a pitcher for the last three years, and we just don’t think that that is going to change when push comes to shove in his first start back. Go with Gonzalez and the Nats to come on the road and take the easy victory at Fenway Park.
