The New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers are jockeying for position in the AL Wild Card standings and the Yankees are falling behind. Despite a five-game winning streak that was snapped on Tuesday night, the Yankees now trail the Tigers by three games in the standings following Tuesday’s 5-2 loss.. The Tigers would be happy to get into the playoffs as a wild card, but they have their sights set on the AL Central Division Title for the fourth straight season.
Shane Greene has been a pleasant surprise so far for the Yankees with a 3-1 record and a 3.17 ERA. His emergence to keep the Yankees in the race has been huge because of the injuries to Masahiro Tanaka and CC Sabathia. Greene has made seven starts since being recalled by Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and he has allowed just 17 runs in 48 innings. He has struck out nearly a batter per inning even though he doesn’t have overpowering stuff. In four starts covering 23.2 innings this month, Greene has only one win, but the Yankees are 4-0 in those starts.
David Price has come as advertised for the Tigers. He’s just 1-1 with a 2.35 ERA, but he’s allowed just 17 hits and six walks in his 30.2 innings of work. Price now has a league-leading total of 221 strikeouts and has worked the most innings of any starter in the league with 201.1 already. In 15 starts since the beginning of June, Price has a 2.08 ERA and has a 131/20 K/BB ratio over 117 innings of work. Opposing batters have a .195/.232/.316 slash in that span.
Greene will be facing the Tigers for the second time in his young career. He threw eight shutout innings against them on August 7, which was the only game he’s earned a win since July 12. The Yankees are 6-2 in Greene’s eight starts for a profit of 4.24 units.
Price has faced the Yankees a lot as a former member of the Tampa Bay Rays. This will be his 25th start against the Yankees. In those 25 starts and one relief appearance, Price is 10-5 with a 3.63 ERA. This will be Price’s fifth start against New York this season and he is 1-1 with a 3.58 ERA.
Free MLB Pick: New York Yankees
This line seems a bit off as the Tigers look like they should be a much bigger favorite. Shane Greene has pitched very well and the Yankees have fewer bullpen problems than the Tigers. In a game that could be close in the late innings, the Yankees may have an edge there and are certainly worth the +150-160 price if it becomes a battle of the bullpens. The Tigers offense is limping with some injuries and hasn’t been as prolific as they should be.
