College Football Betting Trends- Week 1 Matchups in the Big 12
Week 1 of the 2013 college football season gets underway the weekend of Aug.30 with most Division IA schools in action. In order to give you a jump on handicapping some of these matchups, BetOnline has released it opening lines for all the games on the schedule. College Betting Trends has been working its way through all the major conferences and this time around will take a closer look at some of the key Week 1 contests involving teams from the Big 12 Conference.
The Texas Tech Raiders will be the first team from the Big 12 to take the field this season with a Friday, Aug.30th showdown against in-state rival SMU, which will be playing its first game as a member of the newly formed American Athletic Conference (AAC). The Raiders are coming off an 8-5 straight-up record in 2012 that included a 4-5 SU record in conference play. They failed to cover the spread in their final six games last year to finish 6-7 ATS. Texas Tech has been opened as a five-point road favorite over SMU for this season opener with the total set at 63. The Mustangs went 7-6 SU and 8-5 ATS last season but they covered in seven of eight home games. The Red Raiders have won the last five meetings SU dating back to 2004, but the series is tied 2-2-1 ATS.
West Virginia will open-up its second season in the conference against D-IAA William & Mary in a 12 p.m. start on Saturday, Aug.31. The opening line has yet to be set for this game. The Mountaineers went 4-5 SU in Big 12 play last season and 7-6 SU overall. They were 5-8 ATS and the total stayed UNDER in their final three games.
The Oklahoma State Cowboys are +265 favorites to win the Big 12 title this season. They will start the season at Reliant Stadium in Houston against the SEC’s Mississippi State Bulldogs as 13.5-point favorites in Texas Kickoff Classic. The total for this game has been set at 66. The Cowboys were 8-5 SU last season with a 5-4 SU record in conference play. They went 7-5 ATS and the total went OVER in eight of 12 games. The Bulldogs were 8-5 SU as well with a 4-4 SU record in the SEC. They finished 6-7 ATS and the total stayed UNDER in seven of 12 games. These two teams last met in 1999 with Miss State winning 29-11 as a three-point home favorite.
In a 7 p.m. start on Saturday, Aug.31 the Oklahoma Sooners will play host to the UL Monroe Warhawks out of the Sun Belt Conference. The Sooners have been opened as 23.5-point favorites with the total line set at 65. A loss to Kansas State cost Oklahoma a Big 12 title last season and they have been opened as a +375 fourth-favorite to win one this year. It was 10-3 SU overall last season but just 6-7 ATS. The Warhawks went 8-5 both SU and ATS in 2012 and they were 5-1 ATS on the road.
The Texas Longhorns are +280 second-favorites to win the Big 12 this season after posting a disappointing 5-4 SU record in conference play last year. Texas will host the New Mexico State Aggies in their season opener who are playing as a D-IA Independent this season. Last year, Texas went 9-4 SU overall and 6-7 ATS, while the Aggies suffered through a 1-11 SU (4-8 ATS) campaign. The Longhorns have been opened as prohibitive 42-point favorites for this matchup with the total set at 61.
Another one of the top favorites to win the conference title this season at +360 is TCU. The Horned Frogs went 7-6 SU in 2012 and 4-5 SU in their first season in the Big 12. They will host the SEC’s LSU Tigers in a 9 p.m. start on that Saturday night as five-point home underdogs with the total set at 43. TCU was 5-8 ATS last year including a 2-4 record at home ATS. The Tigers went 10-3 SU but they failed to cover in eight of those 13 games.
