College Football Betting Trends- Week 1 Matchups in the Pac-12
The 2013 college football season kicks things off the weekend of Aug.30 with most of the major Division IA schools in action. BetOnline has already released it opening lines for the majority of the games to give you an early jump on handicapping the matchups. Over the past few weeks College Betting Trends has been working its way through the Week 1 games for all the major conferences and this time around will take a closer look at some of the key contests involving teams from the Pac-12 Conference.
The Utah Utes will be the first team from the Pac-12 to take the field this season in a Thursday, Aug. 29 in-state showdown against Utah State, from the Mountain West. The Utes went 5-7 straight-up last season including a 3-6 SU record in conference play. They also went 5-7 against the spread and the total went OVER in three of five home games last year. They have been opened as 2.5-point home favorites in this matchup with the total set at 54. Last season, Utah State was 11-2 SU with a profitable 11-1-1 record ATS. The total stayed UNDER in nine of 12 games.
Later Thursday night, USC will take the field against Hawaii as a 21.5-point road favorite. The total for this game has been set at 58. The Trojans are coming off a very disappointing 7-6 SU record in 2012 and a costly 3-10 record ATS. The Warriors went 3-9 SU (5-7 ATS) last year. On Friday night, Arizona faces Division IAA Northern Arizona in a 10 p.m. (ET) start at Arizona Stadium. The opening line has yet to be set for this game. The Wildcats were 8-5 SU and 6-7 ATS last season.
There is a full slate of games on Saturday, Aug.31 starting with D-IAA Nicholls State taking-on the No.3 Oregon in a 4 p.m. start. The Ducks are coming off a very successful 12-1 SU campaign in 2012 that included an 8-1 SU record in conference play. They went 8-5 ATS but were an even 4-4 ATS at home. The line for this game has not been set, but you can expect it to be one of the biggest spreads on the board for opening day.
Another D-IAA school Eastern Washington will be at Oregon State in a 6 p.m. start. The Beavers finished third in the Pac-12 North Division last year with a record of 6-3 SU and they went 9-4 SU (8-5 ATS) overall. The total went OVER in seven of 12 games. The line for this matchup has not been released.
In a 7 p.m. start on ESPNU, the Washington State Cougars will be on the road against the SEC’s Auburn Tigers with both teams looking for a fresh start from a dismal 2012 season. The Cougars won just one conference game last season and were 3-9 SU (5-7 ATS) overall. The Tigers went winless in the SEC (0-8 SU) en route to a 3-9 SU (4-8 ATS) record as well. Auburn has been opened as a 15.5-point favorite for this contest with the total set at 49.
Rounding out Saturday’s schedule, UCLA will play host to the MWC Nevada Wolf Pack in a 10 p.m. start and Northwestern, out of the Big Ten will be on the road against California at 10:30 p.m. The Bruins won the Pac-12 South Division last season at 6-3 SU and were 9-5 SU (8-6 ATS). They have been opened as 14.5-point home favorites with the total set at 67. The Golden Bears are coming off a 3-9 record both SU and ATS. They are 8.5-point home underdogs against a Wildcats’ team that went 10-3 SU in 2012 and 12-1 ATS. The total for this matchup has been set at 55.
