College Football Betting Trends- Week 1 Matchups in the SEC
The 2013 college football season kicks things off the weekend of Aug.30 and the high-powered SEC will begin its quest to extend it record of producing consecutive BCS National Champions to eight. Alabama will be going for its third-straight national title and fourth in five years. The following is a closer look at some of the key contests involving teams from the toughest conference in college football.
The No.6 South Carolina Gamecocks will get the ball rolling with a cross-state showdown against the ACC’s North Carolina Tar Heels on Thursday, Aug. 29 in a nationally televised game on ESPN. The Gamecocks have been opened as 10.5-point home favorites with the total line set at 57.5. Last season South Carolina went 11-2 straight-up and 8-5 against the spread. It covered in five of eight home games. The Tar Heels were 8-4 SU and 6-6 ATS. They were just 1-4 ATS on the road.
Later Thursday night is a Week 1 SEC matchup between Mississippi and Vanderbilt. Ole Miss has been opened as a three-point road favorite over their conference rivals with the total set at 53.5. Expectations are running high this season for the Rebels after going 7-6 SU last season and a profitable 10-3 ATS. They were 4-1 ATS on the road and the total stayed UNDER in four of the five games. The Commodores are coming off one of their best seasons in school history with a 9-4 record both SU and ATS. They were 5-2 ATS at home last year. Vanderbilt has won five of the last six meetings SU including a tight 27-26 victory last season as a 2.5-point road underdog.
No. 10 Florida will kick-off Saturday’s slate at 12:21 p.m. (ET) when it plays host to the MAC’s Toledo Rockets in a game that will be available on ESPN3.com. The Gators have been opened as 23-point home favorites and the total has been set at 51. Florida is coming off a successful 11-2 SU campaign in 2012 with a 7-6 record ATS. The total stayed UNDER in five of its seven games played at home.
No. 6 Texas A&M will take the field in its second season in the SEC on Saturday against Rice. While it has yet to be determined what quarterback Johnny Manziel’s playing status for this game will be, the Aggies have been opened as 26.5-point home favorites for this C-USA/SEC clash with the total set at a whopping 71.5 points. Texas A&M went 11-2 SU last season and 8-5 ATS, while the Owls posted a 7-6 SU (8-4-1 ATS) mark in 2012.
In a 3:30 p.m. start, ABC will feature a SEC/Big 12 clash between Mississippi State and No. 14 Oklahoma State in the Texas Kickoff Classic. The Cowboys have been opened as 12.5-point favorites with the total set at 66. The Bulldogs were 8-5 SU in 2012 but just 6-7 ATS. The total stayed UNDER in seven of their 12 games. Oklahoma State was 8-5 SU and ATS with the total going OVER in eight of 12 games.
The No.1-ranked Crimson Tide will open defense of their national title in another neutral site game against the ACC’s Virginia Tech Hokies. This contest will be played at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta and broadcast nationally on ESPN starting at 5:30 p.m. Alabama has been opened as an 18.5-point favorite and the total line has been set at 45.5. The Tide had just one SU loss last season on their way to the BCS title, but they were no bargain to wager on at 7-7 ATS. Virginia Tech was downright costly for bettors with a 7-6 SU record and a 4-9 record ATS.
Saturday night features another SEC/ACC clash when No. 5 Georgia squares-off against No. 8 Clemson in what should be the best matchup on the Week 1 schedule. This game is set to get underway at 8 p.m. and it will be broadcast nationally on ABC. The Bulldogs come in as slight 1.5-point road favorites with the total set at 68. Georgia went 12-2 SU and 8-6 ATS in 2012 and the Tigers were 11-2 SU and 9-4 ATS.
