West Virginia Mountaineers
(9-4, 3-7 ATS)
(12-3, 9-5 ATS)
Kick off your Saturday morning on the hardwood with some great college basketball betting action from the Verizon Center in our nation’s capitol, as the Georgetown Hoyas face off with the West Virginia Mountaineers.
The Mountaineers have gotten off to a horrible start this year in Big East play, as they have already gone 1-2 SU and 0-3 ATS, and the only reason that they have a win to date is because they took on a very lowly bunch of DePaul Blue Demons. The good news is that this is the last road game for over two weeks, as the next four tussles are all at home. Still, the ‘Neers know that they have a heck of a lot of work to do to get into the NCAA Tournament. Kevin Jones really has to feel like the last man standing right now, as he is really the only big time performer from last season’s team. He is averaging just 13.5 points per game though, and he really does need some help from some other players. Casey Mitchell is the squad’s leading scorer at 16.8 points per game. John Flowers looks to be playing the roll of a dominating force inside, as he has 33 blocks and an average of 6.4 boards per game, but he is often in foul trouble and already has 42 whistles against him in just 13 games.
We were stunned at the beginning of this week when the Hoyas were taken down by the St. John’s Red Storm, but this is a different challenge at home against a lesser opponent. You aren’t going to be holding Austin Freeman to just six points on 2-of-10 shooting every night, nor are you going to get Julian Vaughn into foul trouble early and keep him on the bench for almost half of the game because of it. Still, this is now two major meltdowns in a span of just three games in Big East play for Head Coach John Thompson III’s team. This has been the epitome of inconsistency for a team that has scored at least 86 points seven times in its last ten games. The three duds of the bunch? A 61-58 loss to the Red Storm, a 69-55 loss to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and a 68-65 loss to the Temple Owls. The good news is that all three of those games came on the road, and the Hoyas have just not been stopped this year at home. Sure, they only beat this same DePaul team by nine points as 22 point favorites to drop to 0-3 ATS, but we know that there is better in the Hoyas, and that game provided a relatively comfortable victory anyway.
Georgetown has been fooling the oddsmakers so far, but in this case, they have over adjusted. The Hoyas are clearly the better team in this game, as WVU is reeling and is going to be falling flat in a hurry. Asking this team to lay just 5.5 points at home seems like a fantastic bet.
