The younger Williams sister faced a tad bit of resistance for the first time in several matches in this tournament in the semifinals against unseeded Petra Kvitova on Thursday. The Czech took the lead early in the set by breaking Williams and looked to be headed towards an upset in the set. However, the American stormed back, earned back her break, and then won in the tiebreaker 7-5. From there, Williams coasted to a 6-2 victory in the second set to come to her third straight Wimbledon finale and her sixth overall. In those finals, Williams is 3-2 to date. Only one of the five matches came against someone aside from older sister, Venus, with that match ending in defeat to Maria Sharapova in 2004l. One of the two Williams sisters has won this event eight times since 2000.

Zvonareva has to have at least a tad bit of confidence having already beaten Williams in doubles in this tournament. The Moscow native and her partner, fellow Russian Elena Vesnina upset the American sisters 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. On Friday, Zvonareva will be playing her semifinals for doubles. Needless to say, she has played a ton of tennis over this fortnight, and we haven’t even discussed the two rounds that she played of mixed doubles as well. In the singles draw, Zvonareva has been tested severely in back to back matches, falling behind by a set before storming back to win the final two against both Kim Clijsters and Tsvetana Pironkova. However, this challenge is a significantly different and greater one, as beating the #1 player in the world doesn’t come easily. This is the first time that Zvonareva has ever played in a Grand Slam finale.

We’d love to lay the lumber with Williams here, but we still think that she is beatable in this tournament, especially at these types of odds. Zvonareva has been tested time and time again, and we think that there is definitely better than a one in four chance that she can win this match, even if she happens to fall behind by a set.
