NBA – March 26th
If the Boston Celtics are realistically going to have any chance of staying in the race to win the Atlantic Division, they’ll need to beat the NBA betting lines against the New York Knicks on Tuesday night in one of the showcase games on the docket.
The Knicks are clearly starting to play some better basketball right now, but we aren’t all that sure what’s pushing this team in the right direction. It’s clear that the win over the Utah Jazz was one of the biggest that New York has had this year, as they spurred a four-game winning streak that has helped the team hold the Atlantic Division lead for the time being. Part of the key has been the lousy schedule. Ever since coming home from the West Coast, the Knicks have had games against the Orlando Magic and two against the Toronto Raptors. You’re not going to lose all that many against those teams at the moment. However, part of the success has been the fact that F Carmelo Anthony is back in the fold after getting his knee drained, and he is back to being one of the top scorers in the league. Melo put up 65 points and 14 boards in two games against the Raptors over the weekend, and he is clearly set to rock and roll for the rest of the year for the Knickerbockers.
Boston meanwhile, has been a wreck all season long. First it was G Rajon Rondo that went down with a season ending ACL injury. Then it was F Jared Sullinger. Now, F Kevin Garnett is having ankle problems that will end up costing him fairly close to a month of the season when it’s all said and done with. It’s not a good time to be a Celtic right now, as Boston has been beaten in four games in a row. We do have to admit though, that the schedule has been awfully tough with three games of those four in which the team has been at least a 4.5-point underdog. There’s only so much that the offense can do without KG and Rondo out there though, and though F Jeff Green has stepped up and come up with some big nights, he and F Paul Pierce can’t do it all. The team is clearly lacking a point guard, and it just doesn’t have the bigs to be able to compete in the paint against a lot of teams as well.
All of that being said, we think that the motivation for the Celtics is going to be stronger in this game than it will be for the Knicks. New York has done its part, and it is going to be playing on the road again. The Knicks are overhyped, knowing that they have won four in a row – against a pansy schedule, and the Celtics are undervalued, knowing that they have lost four in a row – against a very difficult schedule (and mostly in close games). We want the boys from Beantown on Tuesday. Boston 100 – New York 97
