The Subway Series is in the Bronx on Thursday night as the Mets take on the Yankees. The Yankees are still trying to recover from the shock of Mariano Rivera blowing a save in Tuesday night’s game at Citi Field. You better believe that they’ll want to end this series on an up note. The Mets have been playing much better baseball against the Yankees than they were before this home and home series started. Let’s take a look at this series finale.
The Mets managed to win Tuesday by scoring two runs before Mariano Rivera had even gotten an out. That was the first time Rivera had ever blown a save without recording an out. While the Mets have shown some fight in this series, it has been yet another disappointing season overall for the Mets faithful. Ike Davis, Lucas Duda, and Reuben Tejada have struggled all year. After shockingly leading the National League in RBI’s for much of the month of April, John Buck has been in a terrible tailspin of late. The Mets are hitting just .229 as a team.
The Mets pitching staff hasn’t been very good, and the bullpen is once again one of the worst in baseball. Dillon Gee is one of the most inconsistent pitchers you’ll find in all of baseball. Gee has allowed 4 runs or more in six of his last nine starts overall. Other than Bobby Parnell, no one in this Mets bullpen has an ERA of less than 3.
The New York Yankees are showing signs of slowing down just a bit over the last few days. This is a team that has outperformed expectations in a big way so far this year. Despite being without tons of offensive stars, the Yankees lineup has produced in a big way. It has been the work of guys like Travis Hafner, Vernon Wells, and Lyle Overbay. The Yankees are averaging 4.18 runs per game for the year, but that number has been steadily decreasing over the past week. Is this team finally hitting a wall without its offensive stars?
The Yankees have gotten a lot more than they could ever expect from their patched up lineup, but they are really going to need their pitching staff to hold it together for them until some more of their offensive stars get back in the lineup. Vidal Nuno has allowed just 2 runs in his two starts so far this year. Nuno has some great numbers in Triple A in his career, so he might be a guy that could contribute for this team moving forward.
Free Pick: Under 9
The Yankees offense has been slowing down quite a bit of late, and I like Nuno’s chances of quieting down the Mets lineup. This number is set a little too high.
