Things haven’t gone the way that the Texas Rangers wanted them to, but it’s still a big draw when the New York Yankees come to town. The two teams will continue their weekday series on Fox Sports 1 on Tuesday night as recent acquisition Brandon McCarthy returns to Texas to face off against Nick Martinez. The Yankees lost 4-2 to Yu Darvish and the Rangers on Monday night. The loss pushed the Yankees two games behind the Blue Jays in the AL East race for second place while the win for the Rangers improved them to 42-64 on the season.
The season got off to an exceptionally rough start for Brandon McCarthy, who was 3-10 with a 5.01 ERA in 18 starts for the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was acquired on July 6 and has been strong in three starts for the Yankees with a 1.45 ERA. McCarthy was a member of the Texas Rangers for three years from 2007-09 and posted a 13-15 record in 45 appearances, 44 starts, with a 4.68 ERA. McCarthy added velocity over the offseason and he’s struggled to command his sinker with the extra miles per hour. Opposing batters have hit 16 home runs off of him this season, though he has only allowed one this month.
Nick Martinez was drafted in the 18th round of the 2011 Draft and made his MLB debut on April 5. A plethora of starting pitcher injuries for the Rangers forced Martinez into action this season and he’s made 17 appearances with 12 starts this season. He got his first Major League win on May 24, but has only thrown a quality start (6+ IP, three or fewer ER) in four of those 12 starts. This will be Martinez’s second start since being recalled on July 22 to face these same New York Yankees. Since returning to a starting role for the Rangers on May 18, Martinez is 1-5 with a 5.80 ERA.
McCarthy will be making his 12th career start and 14th career appearance against the Rangers. He is 3-5 with a 4.41 ERA. He last faced them last week and threw six terrific innings, allowing one run on four hits in a Yankees victory. The Yankees are 3-0 in his three starts for a profit of 3.18 units.
Martinez will be facing his second career start against the Yankees. He pitched well against them last week, allowing just three hits and a walk over 5.1 scoreless innings. He did not factor into the decision and the Rangers lost 2-1. In his 12 starts, the Rangers are just 4-8 for a loss of 2.74 units.

Brandon McCarthy’s advanced metrics suggested that he had a gotten a little bit unlucky, but it was the home run rate that had seriously inflated his ERA. He seems to have found something that works of late, as he has allowed only one home run this month and only two over his last seven starts. The Rangers are in shambles right now and the Yankees are still playing for possible playoff positioning in the American League Wild Card chase.
